  5. Undertaking compliance monitoring on key quality and safety standards

INFECTION PREVENTION CONTROL

The infection prevention and control unit performs the following functions:

  1. Implementation of policies on ipc by educating staff in the facility
  2. Advising on procurement of equipment and consumables for ipc
  3. Ensure maintenance of ipc equipment
  4. Monitor, supervise and evaluate ipc activities
  5. Liase with the hospital in-service training coordinators on training programmes in ipc
  6. Dissemination of information on ipc
  7. Conduct weekly training for all new staff

FEMALE MEDICAL WARD

Female medical ward also known as ward two is a 16 bed capacity female ward that caters for female client with medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, pneumonia, anaemia cerebrocascular accident, etc. Admission to the ward is through the outpatient department and the emergency ward.

The various activities in the ward includes:

  1. Admission of patients
  2. Monitoring of vital signs
  3. Administration of medications
  4. Suctioning of patients
  5. Daily review by doctors
  6. Insertion of catheter
  7. Nasogatric tube insertion

LAUNDRY & SEWING

The various activities performed in the department includes:

  1. Laundry services (picking up of laundry, washing, drying, ironing, folding) distributing laundry to the wards.
  2. Sewing of hospital materials like bedsheets, curtains, theatre gowns, uniforms, etc

  1. HEALTH INFORMATION/RECORDS DEPARTMENT

Health Information/Records Unit is the first point of call in the service delivery chain. The Unit also doubled as Statistics Unit. We run 24hrs services including weekends. It has three adjoining Units i.e. Maternity Reports, Achimota School Clinic records and Achimota transport Terminal records.

The Unit provide the following Services in the facility;

 

1. DATA CAPTURE
A. Registration of New and Old Patient using appropriate register/ Health Information Management System (HIMS).
B. Data capture on OPD Morbidity and Mortality
C. Data capture on Facility Bed utilization
D. Data capture on admission and discharges
E. Data capture on returns on deliveries.

 

2. DATA COLLATION
Collate data from the first to the last day of the month (e.g. 1st to 31st of July).

 

3. DATA VERIFICATIONA AND VALIDATION
Meet monthly to verify and validate data before transmission.

4. DATA TRANSMISSION
Transmit reporting forms either manual or electronic to the next level within the deadline (facility to District -5th of the ensuing month).

 

5.DATA ANALYSIS
A. Run simple frequencies for events and cases.
B. Cross tabulate events/cases by months
C. Compare performances with targets
D. Draw graphs to demonstrate performance and trends.
E. Interpret findings and discuss results.

 

6. REPORT WRITING
A. Reports on special events and activities such as disease outbreak response.
C. Holistic assessment report/analysis.

 

7. DATA STORAGE
A. Filing and retrieval of patient folders
B. Keeps all registers for life
C. File all tally sheets/ books and store in secured place.
D. File all reporting forms and store in secured place.

 

8. DATA REQUEST/RELEASE
Ensure all data requests are well documented and filed as evidence for both external and internal request.

 

9. DATA QUALITY AUDIT (DQA)
A. Select relevant indicators for each audit
B. Perform DQA quarterly
C. Write report, develop action plan to address gaps
D. Implement the action plan
E. Provide feedback to all stakeholders

 

10. DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION
A. Develop a dissemination plan for the facility
B. Identify and make a list of all stakeholders who will receive the disseminated information
C. Identify appropriate communication channels for dissemination.

]]> The Gynaecology department of Achimota Hospital deals with pregnancy and its related services. The department performs the following important roles;

  • Early pregnancies or early gynaecology
  • Reproductive medicine service
  • Rapid access clinics for women with abnormal symptoms
  • Cervical dysplasia
  • Menstrual disorders
  • Pelvic pain
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Urinary incontinence

Pregnancies and its related diseases example, pregnancy-induced hypertension, diabetes in pregnancy, pre-eclampsia and malaria in pregnancy. Patients are seen on a daily basis in the outpatient department. Each team has a fixed clinic day.

Emergency cases are seen in the emergency room by the on-call team. Patients are admitted from here to the emergency lying-in wards for surgery or for further investigations and treatment.

Patients seen at the clinic who need elective surgery are placed on waiting lists of variable lengths depending on the type of surgery and the urgency of the case. The patient is reviewed by the anaesthetist at the anaesthesia clinic held at the surgical block. The patient is admitted to the ward only after she had been declared fit for surgery by the anaesthetist.

TYPES OF IMAGING SERVICES WE PROVIDE

CAT/CT Scans

A CAT Scan or computed tomography (CT), is a medical imaging method that produces a volume of data that can be manipulated (through a process known as windowing) to demonstrate various bodily structures based on their ability to block the x-ray beam. A CAT is created by combining a series of x-ray views taken from different angles. Modern scanners allow for 3-D representations of structures.

Magnetic Resonance Angiograms

One type of diagnostic imaging we provide at Envision Radiology is MRA Scans (Magnetic Resonance Angiogram). MRA scans are obtained using the same kind of scanning machine as an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan. The MRA machine combines radiofrequency waves with a strong magnetic field to generate images with incredible detail of your body’s blood vessels.

What Is Ultrasound Imaging?

Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, is a safe imaging technique that produces images of the inside of the body using high-frequency sound waves as opposed to radiation. This is what makes it a safe procedure to employ during pregnancy. The images captured by ultrasound are in real-time and show the movement and structure of internal organs, as well as blood as it flows through the vessels.

What Is an X-ray?

An x-ray, which is short for x-radiation, is a type of imaging test that has been utilized for years. With this technology, doctors can see your bones, muscle and more without having to make an incision. This helps them diagnose, treat and monitor a number of different medical conditions. Because the test uses a form of electromagnetic radiation, there are some risks involved in the procedure. However, the benefits far outweigh these potential risks.
